This is the heart of it — the place everything else grew around. Pine forest, soft ground, the river running past, and space enough that you never have to hear your neighbours.

The facilities are in the main building and around the clearing: toilets, showers and a sauna, a café for coffee, tea, refreshments, ice cream and snacks, a lounge room for the rainy afternoon, wind shelters with fireplaces, a large grill house with tables and benches, a playground and a ball field. Two Type 2 EV chargers at 7.4 kW.

You can launch a canoe straight onto the Sorka from here and be on Lake Femund inside an hour.

They spent an hour with us and a map before we left, and every single thing they said about the wind turned out to be right. Six days, two portages, no other people.

The tipi was warmer than our house. Our seven-year-old fell asleep to the sound of the river and has asked about the beavers every week since.

Been paddling Femundsmarka for twenty years and still book the canoe here. Aluminium boats, proper kit, and people who actually know the water.

A letter from the lake, four times a year

Ice-out dates, when the mosquitoes ease off, new routes, last-minute openings. No noise.
